New Poem: My sister is a comet

My sister is a comet.
She passes through my atmosphere about once a year
Many times I don’t grab my telescope fast enough
To catch a glimpse of her
I can barely make her out
Her faint tail so unspectacular

But every once in a while
When the sun shines on her just right
And her orbit is close enough
She beams miraculous
Visible to the naked eye
A brilliant display
Tickling the sky with butterfly kisses
Luminous and quick as a birthday candle
So I try not to take her for granted

Sometimes it is only her orbit
That floats by me
But even then
She’s been known to leave spectacular meteor showers
In her wake

I used to pine for her
Like a lost favorite thing
Retrace my steps
Searching for her all over my earth
Wanted to take her home
Like a hardened starfish
Place her on my shelf
I used to want her
To become a moon
Loyal and dull
Frozen in her monotonous spinning
But with me
In all my nights

But I was taught by a little prince
Who fell from an asteroid,
“On ne voit bien
qu’avec le coeur.
L’essentiel
est invisible
pour les yeux.”
One sees clearly
Only with the heart.
What is essential
Is invisible to the eye.

How could I deny
Her glamorous performances
To the other solar systems
Whose auspicious orbits
Float past her trail?

All shimmering illumination
And dazzling sequins
Radiant and flaming
She kisses moons
Glitters through the heavens
Her vapors revive thirsty planets
She lends new fuel to choking suns
Skies breathe deep, taking her in
Wishing like me
That she could stay

So now I can tell them
What that same little prince taught me
That when you miss someone’s laugh,
Someone whose home is in outer space
Then you should only look to the sky
And you will see all the stars laughing

Her hidden charm
Is that she leaves herself
Inside of you
No matter how long she’s gone
Celestial radiance igniting graceful simple
Stardust
And her memory
Of moments
Never long enough
